■The Bride

Traditionally, brides are dressed in white to symbolize purity, although sometimes there are variations including cream, ivory or pastel. Modern brides can choose whichever color they like. For second marriages, it is traditional for the bride wear lavender or lilac.

The wedding venue and the type of ceremony may influence the choice of wedding dress style. For example, a registry office or civil ceremony may allow a less strict dress code, while a church wedding might require more formal, traditional attire. The bride’s dress style is a guide for the rest of the wedding party, and they should follow suit if the bride is dressed formally.

For the new bride, the choosing of the dress is one of most important decisions she will make when planning her wedding.

There are so many options: dresses can be hired, or purchased from specialist wedding retailers or designers, and some brides may wish to design their own. Anyway, it is essential to allow plenty of time for fittings and alterations. When buying lingerie for the wedding, ensure it complements the lines of the wedding gown. Having a dress rehearsal (including lingerie) in advance of the wedding day is always a good idea.

Head-dresses come in a number of styles, including band, veil, bun, crown, tiara and Juliet cap. Browse fashion magazines to collect ideas and inspiration for head-dress and hair-style.

Never overlook or even forget the bride’s jewelry while great care is taken in considering wedding dress, head-dress and make-up etc. Undoubtedly, this would be a missed opportunity to amaze your guests by adding the finishing touch to the perfect appearance. The choice of jewelry will depend hugely on the bride’s outfit. It is suggested that she try a few pieces of jewelry and ask the opinion of relatives and friends. Again allow plenty of time just in case the size needs to be ordered.

■The Bridesmaids

Bridesmaids wear whatever the bride chooses for them. It is perfectly acceptable for them to be dressed differently from each other, particularly when bridesmaids are of differing body shapes and age groups.
