Another separate tale from The Joy Luck Club. The Chinese-American girl Jingmei is locked in a struggle over her identity with her overbearing Chinese immigrant mother. This particular struggle invokes the mother’s attempt to mold her daughter, Jingmei, into a musical prodigy so that she will be able to brag to her friend Lindo Jong, whose daughter is a national chess champion.
2. The Jewbird by Bernard Malamud
In the short story by the Jewish-American writer, the protagonist, a crow named Schwartz, identifies himself as a Jewbird. Fleeing persecution by antisemitic birds, Schwartz tries to find a home with a New York City Jewish family but ends up in persecution and death.
3. Love Medicine by Louise Erdrich
Inspired by Amy Tan, Erdrich’s novel tells a story of two Native American families living on a North Dakota Ojibwe reservation, featuring the characters’ Native American heritage.
