No matter in what kind of situations, appearance gives the first impression, and then the manners and general behavior play important roles afterward. The combined factors of one’s appearance, manners and behavior form the basis of the first impression upon the partners with whom you contact. As for first impressions, there is something called the Primacy Effect: the process where by our first impression of another person causes us to interpret his subsequent behavior in a way consistent with the first impression. This means our first impression of someone is so “critical” because everything we see and hear afterwards gets filtered through our initial opinion. In fact, you create an image of the person and you see his/her following behaviors through this image. The meaning of primacy is very important even the order of information that we receive about somebody changes our impression of him/her.
The theory of the Primacy Effect explains the reason why we regard the personal manners, including the factors of one’s exterior, clothing, verbalism and performance,as the base of the etiquette system.
