Wedding etiquette and rules would govern not only the newlyweds and their families but also the wedding guests. When being a guest, you should follow the simple rules listed below to avoid doing anything mistaken or committing a faux pas at a loved one’s wedding.
◇RSVP promptly. The couple will make many decisions based on the number of people who will be there. Additionally, if you have to cancel after you have accepted, do so as soon as possible.
◇Be on time. If a wedding invitation says that the ceremony will begin at 6, be sure to arrive there no later than 5:45 so as to have enough time to find a seat and get settled, without interrupting the procession.
◇It is very impolite to bringing unexpected guests to the wedding, for the cost for each person attending a wedding is generally high. Don’t bring your date, children or other relatives unless your invitation specifically says their name or “+ Guest”.
◇No need to bring a gift to the wedding. Actually, you would have up until a year after the wedding to give a gift. Someone in the wedding party would have to worry about how to get it home if you bring a gift to the wedding.
◇Many ceremonies have parts where the congregation alternately stands and sits. The program or officiant may tell you when to do so; if not, follow the lead of others around you. If you are physically unable to stand, remain quietly seated.
◇Don’t take photographs during the ceremony. Leave that to the professionals and respect the sanctity of the ritual in front of you.
◇Drink alcohol in moderation. Although a wedding is a time to enjoy yourself, no one appreciates a drunk guest embarrassing themselves.
◇It is customary to still send a wedding gift even if you are unable to attend the wedding.
◇Above all, enjoy yourself, and tell the happy couple that you are so pleased for them.
